Lawn care in the fall: preparing for winter

Cleaning and combing the lawn

The most time consuming part of the work on lawn care in autumn associated with its thorough cleaning from the so-called. "Felt" - a layer of old grass, packed foliage and dead cereal stalks. If the thickness of this layer is less than 1 centimeter, and it itself passes water and air well, then full-scale cleaning work can be omitted. If the thickness of the felt reaches 2-2.5 centimeters or more, then it is better not to hesitate with cleaning and, moreover, not to transfer it to the spring. As it thickens and compresses, this layer will increasingly interfere with the natural moisture and air permeability of the lawn, which will quickly lead to the intensive reproduction of pathogenic fungi and the development of fungal diseases.

In order to avoid the development of fungus on the lawn, the layer of felt is carefully combed out with a rake. If the felt is formed only in some areas, it can be carefully cleaned with a light rake with springy teeth. It is recommended to use a heavy rake to remove the thick felt covering the entire lawn area.

Lawn maintenance in the fall also includes restoration work, which is best done in wet weather. With the right approach, minor defects like bald spots, crumbling edges, depressions and bumps can be easily removed from the lawn with your own hands, without resorting to expensive services of landscape designers and representatives of specialized companies.

Throughout the summer cottage, it is advisable to eliminate any deficiencies in the lawn coverage immediately - as soon as they become visually noticeable. In the fall, it is necessary to once again assess the condition of the lawn and repair all overlooked defects and damages.

Bumps found during the trimming process are usually trimmed and smoothed, but lunge is often formed in the coating as a result of such actions. It is not difficult to cope with them: it is enough only to timely identify bald patches and eliminate them by sowing the grass mixture (the one that was originally used for sowing) or filling up the voids with sod.

Small depressions are leveled with mulching (discussed below), which is carried out annually around mid-September. Deep pits are pre-cut with a sharp spatula or knife, after which the sod is raised and a fertile substrate is poured under it. Then the removed sod is returned to its place and compacted.

Detected areas affected by the fungus (the grass in such places is usually colored gray, yellow, brown or reddish) is treated in autumn with a systemic fungicide - this method of complex preparation of the lawn for winter will make it easier for it to endure the long snowy months. For treatment, you can use inexpensive fungicidal preparations - for example, foundationol.

When traces of earthworm activity are detected, their emissions are swept out in a timely manner, and with the onset of warm spring days, the soil on the lawn is slightly acidified with a selective herbicide.

During operation, the lawn surface becomes highly compacted - first of all, near places with high traffic: gazebos, patios, paths, playgrounds and recreation areas. Over time, this leads to a violation of water-air exchange and, as a result, the appearance of bald spots and depressions.

To restore soil aeration in vulnerable areas, they usually resort to a simple method, which consists in making punctures 8-10 centimeters deep. The most suitable tool here is an ordinary pitchfork - they are stuck into the soil to the indicated depth about every 15 centimeters and swayed slightly.

In addition to garden forks, you can also use:

  • - special nozzles-sandals for aerating small lawns (pictured)
  • - massive hand rollers with spikes (for large areas).

In the process of caring for the lawn in the fall and preparing it for winter, they do not forget about haircuts, which are carried out less and less as the cold weather approaches. If throughout the summer cottage the grass was trimmed regularly - with the onset of autumn days it is enough to cut it once a week. In October, the regular trimming is usually finished, but if the beginning of November is warm and humid, it is allowed to trim the grass one more time.

In the autumn, fertilizing is carried out with phosphorus (ammophos, superphosphate) and potassium-containing (potassium sulfate, potassium chloride) fertilizers. It is advisable to carry out such dressings in September.

It is important to take into account that in autumn they do not carry out (!) Top dressing with fast-acting nitrogen fertilizers, namely, such as:

  • - ammonium sulfate
  • - urea
  • - ammonium nitrate, etc.

The term "mulching" means a special technique that allows you to eliminate any irregularities in the lawn by filling them with a special mixture - mulch. Experienced gardeners try to carry out this procedure every year, as a rule, at the beginning of autumn.

Peat, humus, sod soil, vermicompost and clean compost that does not contain weed seeds or roots are usually used as components for the preparation of mulch. It is also allowed to add fine-grained sand to the mulch composition - especially if heavy, clayey soils prevail on the site.

In advance, the lawn is cleaned of the accumulated layer of plant residues and earth lumps, after which it is combed out with a rake. Then, about 1-2 days before mulching, aeration is carried out by piercing the sod with a pitchfork to a depth of at least 8 centimeters. Due to this procedure, moisture permeability and air exchange are improved in the soil, which greatly increases the efficiency of further mulching.

The prepared fertile mixture for mulching is usually consumed at the rate of 1-1.5 kg per 1 sq. meter. The mixture is carefully spread over the surface of the lawn with the flat side of the rake, without crushing the grass cover and facilitating the penetration of the substrate downward (to the root zone of the plants). The result of all the work should be a perfectly flat lawn surface without bumps and depressions.

To keep the lawn in good condition, snow is not removed from it in winter, but is limited to cleaning only the necessary areas - paths, paths to gazebos, winter two- and single-slope greenhouses and other buildings. Also, experienced summer residents strongly recommend avoiding any movement on the lawn in winter - until a stable snow cover about 30 cm thick forms above it (usually this period falls on December-January with the condition of heavy snowfalls and no thaws).

Preparing the lawn for winter: additional work

When preparing your lawn for the upcoming winter season in the fall, you should not forget about caring for the appropriate garden tools and equipment. The most important cutting tool - the mower - will need to be thoroughly cleaned of adhering soil and plant debris, remove traces of rust and other contaminants, and drain oil and gasoline. Store fully prepared, clean tools in a dry and warm room.

Rules for aeration and fertilization

In early autumn, the soil is enriched with phosphorus and potassium, double superphosphate to strengthen the roots, growth and disease resistance, special fertilizers for the lawn in the autumn. Nitrogen cannot be used because the growth of greenery should not be accelerated before winter. Before fertilizing, which is done evenly throughout the entire territory, the land should be moistened, and the next time it is advisable to water it so that the fertilizers applied can be well absorbed into the ground. It is recommended to use organic fertilizers. Bone meal (to reduce acidity) and wood ash, which contains important trace elements, are useful for lawn grass in autumn. In this case, you must observe precautions and wear gloves and special clothing.

Aeration is understood as uniform punctures of the earth at an optimal depth for saturation with oxygen. It is made with a pitchfork, special sandals with spikes for these purposes, or another unit for aerating large areas. This procedure has a positive effect on the root system, saves the grass from freezing in winter, stagnant water. After it, the lawn cover cannot be disturbed for a couple of days.

Lawn care in autumn and preparation for winter

A well-groomed lawn is a wonderful landscape decoration. But in order for it to please the eye for a long time, attention and hard work are necessary,

after all, without care, the lush green grass can soon lose its attractive appearance and even die.

In the spring-summer period, the lawn needs watering, mowing, feeding, but it is equally important to prepare the grass for winter, to save it for the next year. To prevent your lawn from becoming "balding", it is necessary to carry out thorough work in the fall.

Watering the lawn in autumn

In summer, especially at high temperatures, the lawn is watered daily or every other day. But with the onset of autumn, watering must be significantly reduced. First, the weather sends fewer sunny days, it rains more often, which leads to natural moisture in the soil. Secondly, the lawn grows more slowly, therefore, it needs less water, therefore, even if the frost has not yet come, it should be watered no more than twice a week.

Do not water the lawn a week before the last mowing. After mowing, you can resume occasional watering.

In mid-latitudes, it is recommended to completely stop watering the lawn by the end of September, since excess moisture before frost can cause the root system to freeze, which will lead to the death of the lawn.

During autumn rains, especially if the water is stagnant, you should not walk on the lawn: in the soft soil there may be dents from shoes that will not have time to overgrow, so in spring you may find a "bald spot" in this place of the lawn.

Autumn lawn mowing

If in the summer you had to mow the lawn almost once a week, then by the beginning of autumn the grass begins to grow more slowly, you can cut it 2-3 times a month.

The last mowing of the lawn is imperative. It is better to do this two weeks before the onset of the first frost. It is not recommended to leave the grass that is too tall: it will wither and freeze over the winter, so in the spring it will interfere with the growth of a new one. In addition, tall grass on lawns will require great effort from the root system, which can lead to weakening and even death of the plant. Leaving branches that are too short is also not worth it, as they can freeze and become vulnerable. The recommended lawn grass height is 5 to 8 cm.

Remove the mowed grass after mowing the lawn. There is an opinion about the need to leave the mown grass for the winter, for shelter under the snow of young growth. Experts unequivocally say that cut vegetation must be removed. Better to do it with an ordinary rake.

The collected grass is recommended to be buried in special pits or spread out in the beds. During the winter, it will turn into a good fertilizer that can be used as a natural top dressing.

It is not recommended to burn the lawn grass, even if the upper part of it is dry enough. The root system is not so deep, and the burning temperature can significantly damage it. In addition, the fire, spreading unevenly, can leave dry grass, which will then have to be harvested additionally.

Autumn top dressing of the lawn

Lawn grass, like other plants, needs mineral feeding. Not every soil has all the elements necessary for growth. In the summer, fertilizers containing nitrogen are required, which promotes the growth of the grass. In the autumn period, it is not necessary to stimulate the growth of the lawn, therefore, fertilizers are used for feeding, which include phosphorus (will strengthen the root system, help to endure the winter, will subsequently give lateral growth) and potassium (will help withstand diseases, frost, strengthen the plant). There are special lawn fertilizers in stores that should be used in the fall.

[stextbox image = 'null'] It is recommended to purchase mineral dressing only in specialized stores, and when applied to the lawn, follow the proportions indicated in the instructions. Remember, adding more fertilizer than you should do will not do better, on the contrary, the lawn may die. [/ Stextbox]

Make autumn dressing after the last mowing of the lawn, a week or two before the onset of frost. But you should not do this on the same day when you cut the grass, it is better to feed the vegetation after three to four days, since it needs to get stronger after cutting.

Fertilizing is not recommended in rainy weather. It is preferable that the soil is moist and the grass is dry. Ideal if it rained the next day. This will allow the fertilizer to slide off the grass and into the ground, and the moisture will speed up the absorption process. If the grass itself is wet, the fertilizer can damage it, leaving a burn. It is recommended to water the lawn if it has not rained for two days.

When working with fertilizers, do not forget about your own precautions: work with gloves, specialized clothing and shoes, avoid getting into your mouth, nose, eyes.

Aeration of the lawn soil in autumn

It is necessary to carry out aeration in the fall, as this procedure is simple enough to perform and will help keep your lawn beautiful. To do this, pierce the soil at certain distances (approximately half a meter) with a garden pitchfork.

Even if you have a huge lawn, aeration will not take much time, but you will certainly see the result of it in the spring. By piercing the turf, you promote the penetration of excess moisture into the soil, thereby preventing it from stagnating. After autumn rains, water accumulated on the surface of the lawn can provoke vegetation diseases or damage the root system of the lawn after frost, so it will be better if excess moisture goes deep into the soil.

To carry out aeration, it is not necessary to pierce the soil to the full depth of the forks, it is quite enough to pierce the turf to a depth of about 10 cm. There are special nozzles on lawn mowers that allow aeration quickly enough. Some craftsmen attach broken rakes to shoes and, walking with such a simple device on the lawn, quickly and efficiently aerate the soil, and the step size allows you to pierce the sod through an equal distance.

It is recommended that aeration is carried out exclusively in dry weather, otherwise the lawn can be seriously damaged. Aeration is performed after the last mowing of the lawn and harvesting the mowed grass so that excess vegetation does not interfere.

Lawn cleaning in autumn

It is a mistake to believe that leaves fallen on the lawn will be useful as a natural fertilizer. In autumn, they should be raked with a fan rake to free the grass. This must be done very carefully: because of the rains, the soil becomes soft, even a light pressure on the tool can damage the root system of the grass.

Fallen leaves under the snow can rot, which can damage the root system of the lawn grass. Better to remove them.

Pay attention to the weeds. By caring for your lawn, you also help the weeds grow. Therefore, in the fall, you should carefully examine the lawn and remove unnecessary plants, preferably by pulling them out by the roots.

After you have removed dead leaves, dried grass and weeds from the lawn, thoroughly sweep the lawn with a fan rake.Deeper than during harvesting, processing will allow the access of oxygen to the roots, give them the opportunity to rest during the winter and will stimulate the formation of side shoots, which will make your lawn dense and saturated in spring.

Covering the lawn in autumn

After all procedures, it is recommended to sprinkle the lawn. To do this, use a specially prepared composition of peat or compost, clay and sand. The proportions of the ingredients depend on how the soil is under your lawn.

Autumn sprinkling of the lawn allows you to create natural drainage, especially for heavy soil, retain moisture in light soils, level the lawn if necessary and promote its active growth in the spring.

"Redecoration" of the lawn

During the spring and summer period, the lawn can naturally lose its appearance, therefore, it should be repaired: trim the edges, circle the flower beds (if they are inside the lawn), remove the grass overgrown around the edges.

It is better to plant grass on the formed "bald patches" in the spring, since the need for this may disappear by itself.

Lawn care at the first frost

Winter is not far off, and the first frosts more and more often manifest themselves as a drop in temperature, fog, and first snow.

At such a time, the lawn does not require special attention to itself, but precautions should be taken so as not to harm it:

  • if there are puddles on the lawn or soil moisture is high, try not to step on it
  • if an ice crust has formed on the grass, do not knock it down, and even more so do not try to warm it up with something, this can damage the grass and its root system
  • do not rake the snow that has fallen from the lawn: it will not spoil the grass in any way, on the contrary, it will cover it from severe frosts, and during the spring thaw it will naturally moisten the lawn
  • do not cover the lawn with snow from the paths, it is better for the grass if it is covered with a uniform layer
  • do not cover the lawn with foil or other materials - the grass is capable of withstanding even severe enough frosts, and under the foil it can resist, which will provoke the development of diseases.
